So the children have finally flown the coop and left Mom and Dad with an empty nest. Does that mean Mom is out of work? Not at all. Mom's job has transformed into the role of senior advisor, sometimes financial assistant and overall moral supporter. She may also become GrandMom, which brings its own set of joys and challenges. GrandMom is coach to a new generation of Moms. She is adoring babysitter to her grandkids. And she is like another parent to them, but with no strings attached.
Like the Mom to tots, this Mom is also looking for time. But the time she wants is usually a little different. She wants more time with her children and grandchildren. She wants to know that her efforts were appreciated and that her grown children know just what a force she has been in their lives. This Mom would like to enjoy the fruits of her labors and to see that she has built an enduring family structure that will continue into future generations.
A visit from all her children and their offspring will make this Mom most happy. But hey, she wouldn't turn down flowers, cards, a gift certificate to a fine restaurant, or even a trip to Hawaii if you feel inspired. This Mom has the time to enjoy life and the finer pleasures. So give her thanks, give her gift certificates and give her your time. Cook up a wonderful dinner for her on Mother's Day and let her sit back and watch what a wonderful and capable adult you have finally become.
