Guide Review - "In the Small Kitchen" by Cara Eisenpress and Phoebe Lapine

I was a little cynical when this book showed up on my doorstep. After all, it has been more than a few years since I graduated from college and was starting out in the big city on my own. What could I really learn from cooking newbies? But as I began to read the stories from the "quarter life cooks" - as they call themselves - not only did my memories from those fun early days of cooking come back to me, but I realized these girls really had a flair for cooking with recipes even experienced cooks could enjoy.

I began to test and taste their dishes and found them all approachable and tasty, as did my lucky diners. The yummy photos that accompany many of the dishes don't deceive. The practical suggestions for cooking and entertaining are useful reminders for all ages and stages.

"In the Small Kitchen" would make an excellent gift for anyone starting out in their own kitchen. Whether the newbie simply needs to know how to eat without relying on takeout, requires ideas for what to bring to a potluck, or has no clue how to choose a wine to bring to a dinner party, this friendly book will lead the way. The more seasoned cook will enjoy the nostalgia that comes from reading about those early days, will feast on the delicious photos, and will find recipes for straight-up tasty food. It's a win-win for all.
