Favors

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Party favors are little gifts given to guests by the hosts of a party. They're intended to be mementos of the occasion, and to show the host's appreciation for the guest's attendance. They are customarily given at weddings, bridal and baby showers, and birthday parties, but they're appropriate at any special or not even so special event such as a small dinner party.

There's documentation going as far back as the 16th century of the use of wedding favors.

Hosts and hostesses around the world give out favors. In Italy, the bride and groom give out small packages of candied almonds to their guests. At Spanish weddings guests are given stems of orange blossoms in a vase. Part of the custom behind wedding favors is to share the good luck of the newly married couple with their guests.
