The Orange Julius is one of the most iconic non-alcoholic beverages of yesteryear. Many remember going to the mall in younger days to get this drink from the Orange Julius in the food court. Made with, you guessed it, orange juice, this beverage also featured in its original recipe milk, ice, vanilla, sugar, and a raw egg as an add-on for those in search of extra protein. For our take, we used orange juice, milk, vanilla ice cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and ice. This is a delicious frozen drink that, yes, is sure to chill you down on the hottest days of the year, but will also make you reminisce with family and friends over memories from back in the day. Our recipe makes one drink but it's as simple as doubling or tripling the ingredients to serve more.

More than a smoothie but not so dense as to be considered a shake, the Orange Julius sits in between and makes a fabulous summer mocktail for kids and for adults who abstain from drinking alcohol. Our take on this classic has ice cream to add creaminess and sweetness. Despite the ice cream, the beverage is still very refreshing and not overly sweet. You can mix it first without sugar, taste test, and add sugar if you feel it still needs a touch of sweetness.

This is a dairy-based recipe, but it can easily be adapted to other diets with a few easy swaps. Use vegan ice cream instead of dairy ice cream, or replace it altogether with one frozen banana per person. Use plant-based milk instead of regular milk—almond, oat, cashew or hazelnut milks all work well—and go for the unsweetened kind if possible, adding sugar to taste. No matter the ingredients you choose, make the Orange Julius to order as the ice cream and ice might melt, making the beverage watery. Serve in a tall glass and decorate with an orange slice or fun umbrella. The drink makes a tasty addition to brunch spreads and is a fun beverage to offer at baby showers or other gatherings where alcohol isn't the main idea.

Ingredients
