Setting the Stage
Celebrate Dad's love of the outdoors with a lunch in the garden. Set a table outside decorated with flowerpots that have been planted with seedlings that Dad can later transfer into his garden. Choose seedlings of the variety he most enjoys cultivating, whether flowers or vegetables. As a centerpiece for your table fill a large watering can with a floral arrangement. Use placemats made of a natural material such as bamboo.
After lunch plan to tour his gardens with him so he can show off the fruits of his labor.
The Perfect Gift
If his gardening tools are old, giving him a new set may be just what he needs. New pruning shears, trowels, cultivators, even vegetable cages would be appreciated. If his basic tools are in good shape, look in some of the gardening catalogs to find an unusual tool he doesn't own that would make his work a little easier. Just because this Dad likes to get dirty, it doesn't mean he wouldn't like the best tools for getting the job done. Toss in a snazzy new pair of gardening gloves to complete the package.
