Our sons are 18 and 20 years old next month. From the time they were born, I would help them appreciate their gifts. For example, I'd tell them that "it was so kind of grandma to knit you such a beautiful sweater." Then I would describe the sweater to explain it's beauty. After that, I would say to the boys, "Let us write a thank you note to Grandma so she will know that you appreciate the time she took, to make this very special, beautiful sweater for you, which is undoubtedly one of a kind!" Finally, we'd go to our local post office to find a special stamp for our thank you note and together we would put it down the mail chute!
Our 20-year-old, who is starting his third year of college, never fails to write a thank you note...and wow do people comment about how polite it is for him to do this. Our 18-year-old prefers to thank people in person..and that is just fine too. Perhaps one day he will decide to take pen to hand! Role model, role model, role model.
Thanks for the tip Mary!
