Sweet News in Chocolate from the 2005 New York Fancy Food Show

You'll Find These Sweets Irresistible

By Donna Pilato, About.com

As hard as I try to be a good girl and broad-minded about the products I explore at the Fancy Food Show, there's simply no denying the impulse to explore the latest and greatest flavors in my irresistible temptation - chocolate. Here are my favorite new discoveries in this world of sweetness.

Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker - I've long been a fan of this artisanal chocolate maker and the varieties of dark chocolates they offer. At the show I was able to sample their limited series El Carmen, 75% cacao chocolate. It was delicious and worth tracking down. I was told it would be available for a limited time at a few retailiers including Zingerman's and Pete's Coffee.

Vosges Haut-Chocolat - This chocolatier has made a reputation on the basis of some of the most exotic chocolate flavors you will find. They have added several new exotic flavors to the line, but my favorite at the show was an exceptional rendition of a traditional flavor combination. The Barcelona Bar combines hickory smoked almonds with fleur de sel gray sea salt and dark milk chocolate. The result is a crunchy, chocolatey, salty experience reminiscent of a chocolate covered pretzel, but much better.

Knipschildt Chocolatier - These hand made, artisan chocolates are made with all natural, high quality ingredients with no additives or preservatives. The quality is evident first when you see the chocolates, and then when you taste the complex flavors.

De Fluri's Fine Chocolates - I pity those poor folks with dairy allergies who are unable to enjoy a fine chocolate. That's why De Fluri's grabbed my attention with their soy milk truffles that were tasty enough not to betray their soy secret.

Plantations Arriba - Sure to please the ecologist and chocolate connoisseur alike, Plantations Arriba bars are single-sourced from Ecuador, and feature baking and tasting bars ranging from 65% to 100% cocoa. There's no sugar, flavor or extra vegetable fat added to these bars. They've been given the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal of approval, and will receive your approval too when you taste the uncompromised rich, chocolate flavors that have floral and nutty undertones.
