This race track cake needed to be really big so I baked one large round cake three layers high and one rectangle cake three layers high, then cut the round in half and put half of the circle at each end to make the perfect race track shape.
In advance I rolled and cut some white fondant and stood it up against the sides of a round cake pan a litle smaller than the one I had used to bake the cake. That made the fondant dry in the same round shape so I could use it for the walls at the round ends of the track and I cut a few more and dried them straight for the side walls. I molded the cars out of fondant too and painted them with pure food color gels.
I cut out the flags and painted them the same way. I attached them to lollipop sticks and laid them across the round ends of wooden spoons covered in waxed paper to give them the wavy shape. I iced the sides red and added the flames in a yellowy-orange color. To make it more like flames I added a whole bottle of red sugar sprinkles so it kind of glittered. I iced the track black and used the grass tip (I forget the number) to fill the infield with grass. Then I placed the cars, stuck in the flags and away they go! I just printed the sign on the computer and attached to barbecue skewers to stand up in the back.
