Some of my favorite childhood memories revolve around Saturday mornings. It was the height of luxury to be able to sit around in my pajamas all morning and watch my favorite cartoons after indulging in some sweet, colorful cereal for breakfast. As adults, we don't often give ourselves permission to be that lazy on Saturdays. We're too busy running the kids to soccer games, catching up on all the errands we didn't finish during the week, or popping into the office for a couple of hours to finish up a project.
Well, I think the time has come to return to the simple pleasures of our childhood, and set aside a lazy Saturday morning. Invite your friends to join you and see just how good it feels to be a kid again. I promise you everyone will have fun, and you'll have little more work to do than setting out cereal boxes, toppings and milk!
Setting the Stage
Send out invitations with your favorite cartoon character on the front. Invite your friends to arrive at 10:00a.m., late enough to sleep in a little bit, early enough to catch lots of cartoons!
Tell your friends that proper attire involves pajamas, accompanied by a teddy bear or blankie.
Check out your local television schedule and plan the cartoon line-up for the morning. If you really believe that they just don't make cartoons like they used to, rent your favorite Looney Tunes or other cartoons available on video.
Set your table with colorful, primary color placemats and napkins. Large, deep cereal bowls with big spoons are a must. A small plate for other goodies is optional. Add to that large coffee cups (these are big kids, after all) and juice glasses and your table is complete.
Place a single-serve cereal box, a large spoon, and a cartoon character figures in a tin lunch box for each guest.
- Serve kid-favorite cereals including Lucky Charms, Trix, Froot Loops, Rice Krispies, and Cheerios.
- Arrange a toppings bar that includes sliced bananas, strawberries, blueberries, chopped nuts, mini-marshmallows, granola, wheat germ, chocolate chips, and other goodies that capture your inner child.
- Round out the menu with muffins, coffee cakes, quick breads, and bagels. These can be baked by you, or purchased just as easily.
- Serve several types of juice such as orange, grapefruit and cranberry.
- Provide full and low fat milk, and don't forget the chocolate syrup.
- And as a subtle nod to the grownups we've become, don't forget plenty of hot coffee!
