Are you looking for a little culinary adventure for yourself and your friends? Then now might be the perfect time to explore African cuisine with an African theme dinner party.

African cuisine is a mélange that reflects the influence of the many explorers, settlers and invaders who have visited that great continent over the centuries. But there are certain ingredients that show up more frequently throughout the cuisine than others do. These include yams, cornmeal, millet, peanuts, chilies, tomatoes, bananas, plantains and okra.

In many parts of Africa, meat is less representative of the indigenous cuisine. When it does show up, it's often found in stews. In Eastern Africa, cattle are raised not for the meat, but for the milk and blood that are a staple in the diet of the residents. That particular dish will not be on your menu!

The Menu

Chicken and Groundnut Stew - Groundnut is the African term for peanut.

Maharagwe - A red bean dish from East Africa that can be prepared sweet or savory depending on your use of optional ingredients.

Plantains in Coconut Milk - This delicious side dish comes from the Swahili culture of East Africa.

Okra and Greens - This central African dish uses one of the popular vegetables contributed to Southern U.S. cuisine.

African Squash and Yams - This is a very simple dish to prepare.

Mango Banana Sundae - Dessert is not always served in Africa. However, when it is, fruit is usually a main ingredient.

Cardamom Tea - This recipe hails from East Africa.

Soft drinks, water and beer are the customary beverages with meals.
