Sweet 16 Parties, Part 2

A Backyard Barbecue

By Donna Pilato, About.com

Party Description

A backyard barbecue is a fun, casual party that can be held throughout most of the year in areas that don't experience severe winters. It can accommodate many more guests than a house party. Remember to set a rain date if you can't switch the party indoors in case of bad weather.

Planning Elements

  • Choose the date and plan the guest list.
  • Send out invitations.
  • Plan the menu. Hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled chicken drumsticks, and salads are best bets for this group. Have the teens make their own smores for dessert. Chocolate chip cookies would also be a great addition. Have plenty of soft drinks, water and juices ready for big thirsts after the activities.
  • Put the ingredients in place for activities. Create a scavenger hunt. Set up equipment for volleyball, badminton, lawn bowling, horse shoes, softball, or anything else your yard can accommodate. Set up a good sound system with plenty of party music ready to go.
  • Warn your neighbors, and possibly the police department, that there will be a party in your yard that day. Welcome them to drop by for a hot dog if they're in the area.

Party Favor Suggestion

Send your guests home with a small set of wind chimes to bring a little merriment into their own yards.
