Sweet 16 Parties, Part 2

A Slumber Party

By Donna Pilato, About.com

Party Description

Don't be fooled. These teens are not too old for a slumber party. The question is whether you are? If you have the energy to host an all night party, this will probably be one of the more memorable choices, offering lots of time for fun, silliness, and heart to heart conversations.

If you're a more traditional parent, this party can begin as a co-ed event, but as the evening wears on, the boys can be sent home and with just the girls camping out for the night. If you're a more liberal-minded parent, co-ed sleepovers are becoming common these days too. Of course, with a co-ed sleepover the chaperones can expect not to sleep at all that night.

Do you approve of co-ed teen slumber parties? Take our poll and let us know your opinion.

Planning Elements

  • Select the date and make the guest list.
  • Send out invitations.
  • Plan the evening menu. Pizza, popcorn, snacks and cookies are ideal choices.
  • Don't forget the breakfast menu. A simple breakfast buffet may be all that's required. After a late night the teens may be too tired to eat very much. Bagels, muffins, cereal, fruit, coffee, teas and juice are all good choices for them to help themselves as they manage to drag into the kitchen.
  • Rent one or two movies for the group to watch during the evening.
  • Have some music lined up for anyone who'd like to dance.

Party Favor Suggestion

A small travel alarm clock will make a fitting memory of the evening.
