As much as the Super Bowl is the perfect party for indulging in very casual (dare I say junk food?) snacks, an Oscars buffet is your opportunity to pull out your very fanciest, frou-frou nibbles and decor. It's a glamour-laden evening, even if it's usually in a voyeuristic sense for most of us mere mortals. But go ahead, dare to be grand with your own party and bring the glamour home. After all, if not this year, what are you waiting for?
Setting the Stage
Tell your guests that this will be a black tie optional event. As the host and/or hostess, you should opt for the black tie.
Set your buffet table with your most elegant linens, china, crystal, flatware and serving pieces.
Clusters of single variety flowers, positioned in beautiful crystal vases, are the perfect table decoration. Select elegant flowers such as roses, calla lilies, orchids, poppies or even peonies.
Play the music from your favorite nominated soundtrack.
Take instant photos of your guests when they arrive at the party. Put the developed photos in silver picture frames and give them out as party favors.
Hand your guests ballots when they arrive and ask them to cast their votes for the winners. Award prizes for the most and fewest picks. Prizes could be copies of one of this year's nominated sound tracks. Or award copies of movies in which this year's best actor and actress nominees have acted early in their careers.
Create a trivia contest based on past Oscar winners or on current nominees. For the winners, and especially the losers, prizes could be copies of Leonard Maltin's most current movie and video guide.
