How To Entertain in a Restaurant

By Donna Pilato, About.com

Entertaining in a restaurant will spare you a lot of work, but you also have less control over events. That's why you need to make arrangements in advance.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 30 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Select a restaurant with your guests' preferences in mind. For example, if your guests are vegetarians, don't select a steakhouse; pick a restaurant with a more diverse menu.
  2. If possible, visit the restaurant to make reservations.
  3. Speak with Maitre d' or owner for special requests such as a special table or menu.
  4. If you are giving a surprise party and want to serve a special cake, find out if the restaurant will prepare one for you. If you want to bring your own cake, clear it in advance with the restaurant.
  5. If hosting a large group, prepare placecards. Either make arrangements with the restaurant to lay them out for you, or arrive early enough to do it yourself.
  6. If you will have guests from out of the area, request directions from the restaurant. Most restaurants have directions with maps that you can send to your guests.
  7. Call the day before your event to confirm your reservations.
  8. Arrive before guests to introduce yourself to wait staff.
  9. Inform Maitre D' that you will be the person responsible for the bill.
  10. Pay for coat checking before guests arrive.
  11. Throughout meal, be aware of your guests' satisfaction with their food and service. If there is a problem, bring it up with the owner or Maitre D'.

Tips:

  1. Select a location that is appropriate for your event. If you are hosting a serious business meeting, choose a quiet restaurant that offers privacy.
  2. Purchase a good restaurant review book if you're not familiar with the restaurants in your area.
