A Hostess's Most Important Accessory
While visiting the home of friends this weekend, I was reminded of one of the most important accessories any hostess can have.
Our host and hostess have always been wonderful entertainers. They cook creative, sumptuous meals, the wine is always flowing, the conversation is lively and the visits are always fun. On this visit we had lots of catching up to do after not visiting with them for a whole year. Amid the noisy chatter of children of varying ages (including ourselves!) our hostess set out a lovely array of appetizers. However, she neglected one small detail, napkins, which her husband was quick to tease her about. Quick to admit that she was wrong, my friend turned to me with a laugh and said this week's tip could be "don't forget the napkins!"
However, I think the more important tip to remember from this small episode is don't forget to laugh. No matter what detail goes awry when entertaining, whether little or large, your best accessory will be the ability to laugh at your mistake. It makes your guests comfortable and puts things into the proper perspective. After all, we're talking about entertaining, not brain surgery. So have fun and laugh a lot!
