Tip of the Week

Look here each Monday for a new tip to make entertaining a snap.

Cooling it in the Summertime

A host should never be stuck behind a hot stove cooking for her guests to the point where she doesn't get to participate in the conversation. Especially in the summertime, there is no excuse for neglecting your guests while you cook.

One of the great things about summertime entertaining is that cold foods are always welcome. You can build an entire cold meal that can be prepared hours or days before your guests arrive. If you feel compelled to serve something hot, simply plan to prepare a hot entree from the grill with cold appetizers, soups and salads as accompaniments. If you want to go a little fancier than potato salad, try a vegetable salad with an Asian dressing, a cold rice salad with Mediterranean flavors or a beautiful Niçoise salad as an appetizer.

As you tend the grill, invite your guests to join you and be sure there are plenty of gin and tonics to go around.
