Don't Clean!
If you've been reading enough of these tips, you've probably figured out by now that cleaning is not one of my favorite activities. However, when you're hosting a really special occasion, I understand you want your house to gleam. Maybe it's a new baby celebration, a graduation party or a 50th Anniversary party for your parents, and you will be inviting everyone you've ever known. Then this isn't the time to leave the crumbs on the kitchen floor, the fingerprints on the glass and pray that nobody notices.
But, these are exactly the type of occasions when you are swamped with all the other details of entertaining. That's why I recommend hiring someone to clean your home the day before the event. Don't consider this a luxury, consider this expense as necessary as purchasing the food and drink.
You have several options. With all of these you should get references first. You can call a professional service, get a recommendation for a private cleaning service from a friend, or even hire a mature neighborhood teenager if the parents can vouch for his or her competence. Hey, at teenage rates, test the kid out first and give yourself a little treat. You deserve it!
