Tip of the Week

Look here each Monday for a new tip to make entertaining a snap.

Don't Underestimate the Time Required to...

When I entertain, it always amazes me how the time adds up when finalizing the details for a party. I always feel like the food is under control, but then I realize all the little things I have to do before guests arrive. And although I may have fifteen minutes left to accomplish these tasks, in reality they take longer. So my advice to you (and to myself!) is to give yourself an hour at the end to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Open the wine.
  • Slice the bread and place in serving baskets.
  • Lay out the hors d'oeuvres in serving dishes.
  • Fill the ice bucket if cocktails will be served.
  • Light the candles.
  • Pick up the last minute clutter, while simultaneously chaining the children to a chair to prevent further mess (just kidding!)
  • Change my clothes and freshen up.

I would go so far as to say that having these details in place are more important than having the meal completely ready because these are the details that will have you scurrying around and feeling disorganized. But if these tasks are under control, you can pour yourself and guests a glass a wine as you socialize over the final meal preparations without that harried feeling.

What do you think? What leaves you feeling out of control when guests are due any minute? Visit our forum and let us know.
