Party Icebreakers - 2

Here's One Submitted by a Reader

By Donna Pilato, About.com

After reading the feature, Breaking the Ice, a reader wanted to share the following icebreaker that has worked well in her office.

This is one we used at work, during diversity training. It was a big success and left everyone laughing, relaxed, and receptive to the training.

  1. Begin by dividing the group into Group A and Group B.
  2. Have the people in Group A look over at the folks in Group B and then go over and pair off with the person they feel they have the most in common with.
  3. After chatting together for about 5 minutes have them present the person they chose to the group and explain why they selected that person, and what they discovered about him or her.
  4. Have the people in Group B look over at the folks in Group A and then select the person they feel is LEAST LIKE THEM.
  5. They go over and chat for about 5 minutes and then tell why they selected that person and what they found out about him or her..

While they are chatting, they are all laughing and having a good time. When they explain why they chose that person - "because we both wore glasses, etc," or "because she's blond and I'm brunette," they also discover that they have A LOT IN COMMON, and a LOT OF DIFFERENCES, and this breaks the ice better than anything else could.
