Plan A Surprise Birthday Party
Monday July 14, 2008
I pretty much know how I'll be spending my birthday next weekend. I'll be making my cake, cooking dinner, and then going out to a concert with friends. There's not much of a surprise in these plans. In fact, I don't think I've ever been surprised for my birthday, although I've helped plan surprise parties for others. I wasn't even surprised at my bridal shower, because I pulled the information from my future husband. I guess it was my fault. Have you given someone a surprise birthday party? Did they like it and were you more successful at keeping the secret than my husband was?

As someone who has planned surprise parties for others, I am really surprised that you would ruin the hard work of others.
I have successfully planned and executed several surprise parties. The key for me is to have several levels of surprises in case the initial surprise is ruined. Ex: a surprise and unexpected guest, a never would have guessed gift, entertainer etc…
But I think it is rude for loved ones to spend money and take the time and effort based in love to arrange for the honoree to enjoy the occassion only for it to be ruined or spoiled by their impatience or nosiness.
So bite your tongue and sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride next time.
You’re right, Joy. But, in my defense, it was over 20 years ago and I’ve learned a lot since then. I was too worried at the time about being embarrassed as the center of attention. However, the shower did still go on, and I handled it as gracefully as I could, even though I knew about the day in advance.
