Thank You Notes for Money Gifts

This question was posted today in the Entertaining Forum and I'm curious to know how most readers would answer this one.

"Our son just graduated from high school and a lot of his gifts were money. What is the proper way to write the thank you. Do you mention the money and if so do you mention how much was given? I've heard both ways and just want this to be done properly."
