Why Would Someone Do This?

This story was just posted in our forum and it completely baffles me why someone would do this.

"Late the night before the party, I received a voice mail message from Cindy...She breezily informed me that my husband's ex-wife was also invited, and she added that she was sure that I would like her when I met her...My husband had an excruciating split with Ex twelve years ago. He was upset when he heard the message...I am upset that she put me in this awkward spot at all. How do I respond to Cindy now?"
